Antarctica
In March of 2019, I had the tremendous opportunity to visit the Great White Continent as part of the Marathon Tours Antarctica Marathon staff. The team assembled in Buenos Aires, Argentina for a few days before flying to Ushuaia, at the southernmost tip of South America. From there, we sailed directly south to King George Island. Excitement grew as we crossed the Drake Passage and spotted our first iceberg. When we finally arrived, I was blown away by the stark beauty and scale of the place. Water, rock, ice, and sky. That’s it. Yet those four elements are all I’d ever need for the rest of my life. Much better writers than I have waxed poetic about the beauty of Antarctica, but no words, or even photos, can capture the true magnificence of it. I’ve been fortunate to visit many spectacular places in my life, but Antarctica tops them all.
For most people, this would have been a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but I was fortunate to return with the Marathon Tours & Travel team again in February of 2022. With all the challenges and stress of the past few years, this trip was a re-affirmation of the best and most beautiful things the world has to offer.
