Mexico City

It’s hard to believe Courtney and I were in Mexico City at the start of 2020, right before COVID hit. We figured we were kicking off a great year of travel with this trip, but it turned out to be our one and only until moving to Japan. Over the course of twelve days we ate dozens of tacos and tried some more exotic fare as well (chipolines and dorilocos… look them up). We also splurged on a lavish multi-course meal at Quintonil - one of the best restaurants in Latin America [photo credit: Courtney Dunphy]. The one meal I still think about though, was a pair of tortas chilaquiles (rojo and verde) that we split for breakfast one morning. I’d tried to go a few days before but the line for the cart was too long. I wasn’t denied on my next attempt and it was so worth the extra effort. If I could eat that for breakfast every day I’d die a happy man. To build up our appetites we walked at least ten miles each day, visiting as many parks and museums as we could. The Museum of Anthropology and the Soumaya Museum were both highlights. The Soumaya in particular was brilliant, with a stunningly designed building and sculpture collection that blew my mind. For such a big and bustling city, CDMX boasts an impressive amount of green space and tree-line walkways, which created a neighborhood instead of a big city feel. Overall, we loved our experience there and would recommend a visit to anyone curios about the rich and diverse culture and cuisine of Mexico.
